Family of surgeon killed in bike crash recovers $13M

A jury awarded $17.4 million to the family of a surgeon who sustained fatal injuries in a collision with a medical transport van while bicycling to work. In 2009, Michael Mazurek was riding his bicycle when he was allegedly cut off by an American Medical Response van driven by Gustavo Gonzalez, who was making a non-emergency right turn into a parking lot in San Diego. Mazurek struck the back of the van and slid under its rear tire, which ran over him. He died three weeks later. Mazurek's wife and three young sons sued American Medical Response and Gonzalez, alleging motor vehicle negligence. The defense argued that Mazurek ran a stop sign seconds before the crash and Gonzalez could not see him because it was dark. The jury found Mazurek 25 percent comparatively negligent, which reduced the family's award to $13 million.
