Family of Surgeon Killed in Bike Crash Recovers $13M
A jury awarded $17.4 million to the family of a surgeon who sustained fatal injuries in a collision with a medical transport van while bicycling to work. In 2009, Michael Mazurek was riding his bicycle when he was reportedly cut off by an ambulance driver making a turn in front of him. The bicyclist died several weeks later from the injuries he suffered. His wife and three young sons sued American Medical Response and Gonzalez, alleging motor vehicle negligence. The defense argued that Mazurek ran a stop sign seconds before the crash and Gonzalez could not see him because it was dark. The jury found Mazurek 25 percent comparatively negligent, which reduced the family’s award to $13 million. Estate of Mazurek v. American Medical Response Inc.
